THE conversation around beauty and personal grooming is evolving, reflecting a significant shift in societal norms.
Men are increasingly embracing self-care, challenging traditional ideas of masculinity.
Icons like Timothee’ Chalamet and Harry Styles are leadingthis transformation, showcasing bold fashion choices and skincare routines that defy stereotypes. As Styles once said, “The way you dress is an expression of your personality”, a sentiment that resonates deeply as men seek themselves through grooming and deportment.
Not only local women but globally, they are rushing to beauty products like never before, driven by social media trends and the desire for self-expression.
Platforms like TikTok have amplified this rush, showcasing viral beauty hacks and inspiring countless individuals to explore new products and routines.
In this vibrant landscape, fashionista cum beauty expert, Owen Magengezha has emerged as a trendsetter, capturing attention with his innovative approach to grooming.
From his engaging TikTok videos to the launch of Owen’s Beauty Studio, he has created a buzz that resonates with a new generation eager to redefine beauty standards.
The Saturday Herald on Lifestyle, Fashion 263 section caught up with Owen Magengezha who is at the forefront of this movement in Zimbabwe. Should we say that he is ‘man of the moment’ when it comes to beauty and grooming as far as it concerns?
At just 24, he has established Owen’s Beauty Studio, a sanctuary for beauty enthusiasts seeking high-quality products and personalised services.
Growing up in Zimbabwe, Owen’s journey into the beauty world began with a simple hustle selling perfumes.
He reflects, “Beauty found me before I even realised it. It all started small, but I recognised that beauty is about confidence and feeling good in your own skin.”
This realisation fuelled his desire to create a meaningful space where customers could not only purchase products but also receive expert guidance tailored to their unique needs.
“My inspiration came from a mix of circumstances and passion. I have always been drawn to industries that empower people, and beauty is one of the most transformative,” he said.
“I also noticed a gap in the market, many beauty supply stores focused on selling products but didn’t offer expert advice or a premium shopping experience. I wanted to change that by focusing more on experiential retail and curate a space where customers don’t just buy products but also receive personalized skincare recommendations, engage with trained beauty advisors, and feel truly valued in the process.”
In a market often saturated with options, one of the significant challenges Owen faces is educating customers on how to choose the right products for their skin.
Many individuals, overwhelmed by choices, struggle to find what genuinely works for them.
“That’s why we prioritise expert guidance in our stores,” Owen explains.
His trained beauty advisors provide personalised recommendations based on skin type, concerns, and individual preferences.
This commitment to education helps demystify the beauty process, allowing customers to walk away not just with products but with newfound confidence and knowledge about their skin.
Owen recognises that the beauty industry is ever-evolving, with trends shifting rapidly and customer expectations constantly rising. To stay ahead, he invests time in researching and testing new products, ensuring that his stores offer innovative solutions that meet the diverse needs of his clientele.
He states, “We don’t just stock products; we understand the ingredients and processes behind each one. Quality is our priority.” This dedication to quality sets Owen’s Beauty Studio apart from typical beauty supply stores that often prioritise sales over meaningful customer experiences.
Citing some of the challenges, Owen said the greatest is educating customers about choosing the right products for their skin.
“With so many options available, people often struggle to find what truly works for them.” “Another challenge is the evolving nature of the beauty industry trends shift quickly, and customer expectations are always rising. We have to stay ahead by continuously researching, testing new products, and bringing in innovative solutions that meet our clients’ needs,” he explained.
Asked who his role model is and why, Owen said; “I get a lot of inspiration from role models, I follow online especially Nigerian creatives.”
“Nigerians are the most creative people and original on the continent and I am truly obsessed with how talented and hardworking they are.”
“Creatives like Oke Maduewesi, Adeola Adeyemi, and Jackie Aina have had a significant impact on me. Their success and dedication to their craft constantly motivate me to push myself further and aim for excellence in my own business ventures,” he said.
As more individuals embrace skincare routines, Owen aims to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable exploring their beauty options.
He challenges the outdated notion that skincare is solely for women, emphasizing that skin knows no gender.
“Taking care of your skin is not just a luxury but a form of self-care that everyone deserves.” The rise of grooming can also be seen in the popularity of beauty brands and the increasing number of people seeking expert advice in stores.
Owen’s commitment to fostering this culture is commendable.
By providing a welcoming atmosphere and expert guidance, he empowers customers to take ownership of their grooming routines. “When people feel good in their skin, it radiates confidence,” he notes, highlighting the positive impact of self-care on all aspects of life.
Owen’s aspirations extend beyond the local market.
He envisions collaborating with influential figures in the beauty and entertainment industry to redefine beauty standards across Africa. His current partnership with Jacque Mgido, a professional makeup artist based in the USA, aims to bring premium-quality makeup products to beauty enthusiasts in Zimbabwe.
“By collaborating with established names, we can bridge the gap between local consumers and international beauty trends,” Owen explains.
“The advantages of shopping at Owen’s Beauty Studio are clear. Each product is carefully selected to ensure it meets high standards of quality and effectiveness.”
Owen’s commitment to sourcing safe, high-quality ingredients means that customers can confidently choose products that cater to their specific skin types and concerns.
“Whether it’s acne, hyperpigmentation, or simply seeking a radiant glow, we have something that works for you,” he assures clients, emphasizing his dedication to their well-being. As the lines between beauty and fashion continue to blur, Owen’s personal style reflects his philosophy.
He embodies a bold yet effortless aesthetic, believing that fashion should be an expression of one’s true self.
“Beauty and fashion go hand in hand. I believe in looking good while staying comfortable and true to yourself,” he expresses.
This belief resonates with a growing number of individuals who seek to define their identity through their appearance, emphasizing that beauty and style are deeply personal journeys.
Today, he stands as a testament to the power of embracing change. His journey highlights the importance of self-care and the transformative impact of beauty on one’s confidence and identity. As society continues to evolve and explore the beauty landscape, Owen’s vision for an inclusive, empowering beauty experience remains at the forefront, inspiring a new generation to celebrate their individuality with pride.
“We’re not just selling products; we’re building a community where everyone feels valued,” he affirms, embodying the essence of this new era in beauty.
Here are Owen’s top five pick advice:
Skincare is not a luxury, it’s self-care. Take care of your skin the same way you take care of your health.
Consistency is everything. You can’t use a product for two days and expect magic. Stick to a routine.
Less is more. You don’t need 100 products just a good cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and one or two targeted treatments.
Confidence is your best accessory. When you feel good in your skin, it shows.
There’s this outdated idea that skincare is only for women, which is so far from the truth! Skin has no gender men need to take care of their skin just as much as women do. My advice to men is:
Invest in basics. A face wash, moisturiser, and sunscreen are all you need (to start)
Shaving and skincare go hand in hand. If you have a beard, keep it clean and hydrated.
Smelling good is part of grooming. A great fragrance makes a lasting impression.
