12-year-old chess player, Simbarashe David Kurangwa has said he was aiming to be the youngest grandmaster in the game.
The Windsor Primary School student revealed in an interview that nothing can stop his dream.
Having been introduced to the game last year by his father, Evans Kurangwa, the youngster believes that was the start of his journey to self-discovery.
“I believe the start of my self-awareness journey started last year when my father taught me the game of chess,” he said.
“I have now mastered the game and believe I am one of the best in my age group.”
Simba believes in imparting the knowledge amassed to his fellow peers as he holds such responsibilities.
“I believe I was born a leader and I believe in inspiring others. I am a firm believer in servant leadership where I help others be the best they can be in every endeavour,” he said.
With a great support system, Simba owes it to the driving force behind him and he appreciates their guidance and nurture.
“I have a great support system from my parents to both sets of grandparents. I have great guidance from my pastors, Reverend Nyabote and Maforo.”
Having a game plan is the strategy implored by Simba as he sets sail into each day triumphantly.
“My attitude is to always play to win. I have learned discipline and this has taught me to work through the game believing that even when I’m leading, it’s not over until it’s over. Always have a game plan, read your opponent’s mind, and be three steps ahead.
“My father repeatedly says that the best prepared always wins as preparation and planning are keys to success,” explained Simba.
Not only is the youngster a born leader, he is also equipped with hospitality skills as he extends welcoming invitations to new members.
“I am good at coaching others in the team. Trying as much as I can to make sure that everyone who joins chess feels welcome,” he said.
“My source of inspiration is my father, who is also my chess coach and success motivator. He has also inspired me to pursue golf and entrepreneurship. In business, I must never spend the capital, but the profit,” he said.
Just like every other child, Simba enjoys a good game of soccer and is inspired by Kylian Mbappe, who is his favourite soccer player.
“I love soccer, if I am not playing chess, I am playing soccer with my friends. To my peers, time flies and we should live and enjoy every moment to the fullest, remembering that God is always in control.”
