FOR the last few months Zimbabweans from all over the globe have been sharing selfie videos boasting of their lavish lifestyles on the Facebook page Zvinhu Zvirikufaya (meaning things are going well) but many do not know who runs the page.
Saturday Leisure correspondent Bongani Ndlovu (BN) tracked down the page’s creator and administrator, Fungai Chikuse (FC).
The 29-year-old father of one is a Web developer based in South Africa. Below is what he had to say about the success of the page.
BN: When did you start the page and what was the objective?
FC: I started the page in June this year. I was inspired by several Zimbabweans who were having fun with the video selfies. I thought creating a page would bring the Zimbabweans living in the Diaspora and those living in Zim closer and laugh together.
BN: Where do you get your material?
FC: People send the videos for free. Most people post the videos on the Zvinhu Zvirikufaya page themselves or they send to the [email protected] email. The videos are not scripted, people are creating the videos themselves.
BN: Did you think the page would be this successful?
FC: I’m very humbled by the overwhelming response from people, I didn’t think it would be this huge.
BN: Are you going to have a fashion line, like t-shirts with the logo Zvinhu Zvirikufaya?
FC: Yes I have already started printing t-shirts for people. I am planning to have a website that will be selling the t-shirts soon so people can buy them from anywhere in the world.
BN: Do you think the page projects a plastic lifestyle of Zimbabweans in the Diaspora and locally?
FC: The main point of the videos is that they are jokes. Sometimes people take it a bit too personally by insulting others and I from time to time block them from the page. The whole point is not to be too serious about the videos as they are meant to just laugh with others.
