THE government should expedite the construction of infrastructure befitting Lupane’s status as the provincial capital of Matabeleland North.
This was said by members of the parliamentary committee on Local Government, Public Works and National Housing during their visit to the town.
The chairperson of the committee, Irene Zindi, said most buildings in the town are now dilapidated and something needs to be done.
“The government needs to immediately take measures to spruce up the few buildings that are now falling apart. We noted that at some state of the art offices as well as at Lupane State University, some buildings are already falling apart before construction of the whole structure is complete because of the very long construction periods being taken,” said Zindi.
“A town should be made attractive for people to come. Schools, shelter, water and good sewer systems are the major drivers for a person to want to move to a place.”
The MPs also visited Hwange.
There Zindi said, a critical decision needs to be taken regarding the management of sewer works in the town.
“They (sewer works) are still in the hands of Zinwa, yet Zinwa is doing nothing in terms of repairs,” she said.
“It’s an area that needs clarification and the Minister to really take a decision to put the management of the Hwange sewer works in the hands of the Hwange Local Board.”
