Members of the National Assembly to elect Speaker

MEMBERS of the National Assembly will today elect a new Speaker of Parliament while in the Upper House Senators will elect the President of the Senate.

Clerk of Parliament Mr Kennedy Chokuda will preside over the election process with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission supervising the election.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Parliament said the nominations will be made before the election is conducted.

“Today will see the Election of the Honourable Speaker of Parliament whose process will be conducted by the Clerk of Parliament, Mr. K.M Chokuda under Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Supervision. At 09:53 the bells will be rung and thereafter, at 10:30hrs the election proceedings will commence,” reads the statement.

“This morning in the National Assembly -Rules governing the Election will be circulated to Hon. Members and announced by the clerk of Parliament. Concomitantly, the Clerk of Parliament will call for nominations and if there is more than one nomination, the Election proceeds by way of a secret ballot.”

It said vote counting will be done in the presence of candidate’s agents and announcements of results will be done in the chamber by the Clerk.

It said unlike in previous instances where Parliament would have independent legislator, this year the battle will only be between Zanu PF and Citizen Coalition for Change.

“Unlike the 9th Parliament, the recently sworn in 10th Parliament has no independent member of Parliament. Members are split amongst two political parties. ZANU-PF 176 seats and CCC 103 seats,” reads the statement.

Later in the day, senators will elect the President of Senate.
