A POLICEMAN is fighting for life at Mpilo Central Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after he was assaulted and stabbed with an empty beer bottle at Pumula Beer Garden by four friends for proposing love to a woman who was in their company.

The cop’s assailants John Wunganai, 35, London Ndlovu, 43, Irvine Chemhuru, 30 and Sishwashwa Mathe, 27, appeared before provincial magistrate Willard Maphios Moyo yesterday facing an attempted murder charge.

They were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody to next Tuesday.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza told the court that on Sunday at Pumula Beer Garden, the complainant approached Wunganayi’s girlfriend Resistance Nkomo, 33, and told her that he loved her.

This angered Wunganai who felt the complainant was disrespectful and he started assaulting him, the court heard.

Wunganai’s friends allegedly joined in the attack and used stones and open hands to assault the complainant.

They went on to stab him with an empty beer bottle, the court heard.

The complainant sustained a fractured arm among other injuries.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the accused’s arrest.
