AN 18-year-old man who was arrested for allegedly axing his neighbour’s five-year-old son to death will be examined by two doctors to ascertain his mental stability.
Otshugile Moyo of Matulungundu Village in Gwanda was not asked to plead when he appeared briefly before Gwanda magistrate, Miss Lerato Nyathi facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to May 13.
Prosecuting, Miss Ethel Mahachi requested Moyo to be examined by two doctors as he reportedly had a history of mental illness.
“Your Worship may the accused person be examined by two doctors to ascertain his mental stability as he reportedly has a history of mental illness. This has been raised by the investigating officer as well as the accused person’s family,” she said.
Mahachi said Moyo struck Obedingwa Sibanda with an axe on the back of his head on April 28 at around 9AM resulting in his death. She said a blood-stained axe which Moyo had used to commit the offence was recovered at his home.
Miss Mahachi said Moyo was arrested on the same day at around 11PM.
“On 28 April at around 9AM Obedingwa Sibanda went to play at a neighbouring homestead where Otshugile Moyo stays. He later went to the garden in the company of Moyo who was armed with an axe.
“After a while Moyo returned home alone without Obedingwa. Some children who were playing in the area came across Obedingwa’s body lying in a pool of blood near the garden and they reported to village elders.
“The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and the body was taken to Gwanda District Hospital Mortuary. Police carried out investigations leading to Moyo’s arrest,” she said.
