THE Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned of violent thunderstorms in almost all the country’s provinces today.
The department urged people to take precautionary measures that include avoiding outdoor activities when there are signs of rain.
In a weather update video posted on the department’s official Facebook page, Mr James Ngoma (Jr) from the MSD said: “On Friday there will be widespread thunderstorm activity in almost all provinces of the country with down pours projected over the main watershed.”
The department last week predicted that there would be heavy rains coupled with violent thunderstorms this rainy season.
According to the MSD violent storms, prolonged dry spells, flash floods and tropical cyclones cannot be ruled out as the season progresses.
Six people including four pupils at one school died after they were struck by lightning in the past fortnight.
The deaths were recorded in Matabeleland South’s Umzingwane District and in Chinhoyi in Mashonaland West province.
Zimbabwe and most countries in Southern Africa is expected to receive normal to below-normal rains in the 2018/19 agricultural season.
The erratic rains expected across most of the region, means that SADC countries should brace for drought conditions over large portions of southern Africa. – @tamary98
