MGIQIKA Primary School won the T20 triangular series to lift the 2016 Elifasi Mashaba Chairman’s Cup at the Old Mutual Heath Streak Academy in Bulawayo yesterday.

Mgiqika beat Robert Tredgold Primary by 10 wickets in the deciding match and will now meet REPS and the Old Mutual Academy team in another triangular contest at the same venue on Saturday morning.

The series was in honour of the Academy’s chairman Mashaba for his contribution to the development of cricket in Bulawayo.

“In recognition of his meritorious service in promoting cricket, especially among children hailing from underprivileged areas, the Old Mutual Heath Streak Cricket Academy dedicated the Chairman’s Cup in his honour,” said Joseph Rego, the Academy’s chief executive officer.

He urged people to come in their numbers and support the city’s budding cricketers on Saturday.

“I urge the people of Bulawayo to come out in full force and cheer our little stars, who could one day be the pride of our nation,” said Rego.

He said the event would be turned into an annual feature.

Sixteen primary schools from the city’s western suburbs featured in the Old Mutual Cricket League that started on February 1.

These include Insukamini, Gampu, Sigombe, Robert Tredgold, REPS, Milton Junior, Khumalo Junior, SOS, Mgiqika, Coghlan Girls, Mzilikazi Primary, Mabhukudwana, Mawaba, Mkhithika, Tategulu and Cement.
