BODYBUILDER Godwin Mhaka has set his sights on gold at the upcoming Universe Powerlifting Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, running from September 12 to 14.
The competition will draw over 200 athletes from 50 countries, but Mhaka, riding high from past wins, believes he’s ready to take the top spot.
“Preparations are intense,” said Mhaka.
“Injuries happen, but I’m pushing through. By September, I’ll be ready to smash my personal best.”
This will be Mhaka’s second outing on the international powerlifting stage after making his debut in Dubai.
“I’ve learned from my mistakes and levelled up. This time, I’m bringing home more gold,” he said.
But the road to Bangkok hasn’t been smooth. Mhaka is calling for more sponsorship to help carry the weight of the elite competition.
“Sponsorship remains a major challenge,” he said.
“I am grateful to Musabvunda Apparel and Total Fitness Zimbabwe for their support, but I need more partners to accomplish this mission and lift the Zimbabwean flag high.”
Mhaka is already a decorated athlete, with titles including Mr Ironman Zimbabwe, Mr Zimbabwe, Mr Ironman Botswana, and the 2017 Mr Pretoria Classics. He also took gold in the World Fitness Federation’s Mr Universe Bermuda Beach Model category in Las Vegas.
