Government will start refurbishing facilities such as Mhangura and Alaska mines for residents to have access to modern sporting facilities.

Most of the infrastructure was adversely affected by the closure of the two mines.

In a speech read on his behalf by the director of sport development and promotion in his ministry, Mrs Eugania Chidhakwa, during the Fourth Edition of the Makonde Senator’s Sport Tournament in Chinhoyi at the weekend, Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the refurbishments were part of the ministry’s rapid results initiative.

Government, he said, would also acquire land to develop multi-purpose sport and recreation facilities.

“The initiative seeks to offer standardised hosting of events locally, regionally and internationally, which, in our view as a ministry, will contribute the generation of podium-performance athletes,” he said.

“Through this project, I am glad to announce that my ministry will in the coming few days commence refurbishment works at Mhangura and Alaska sports and recreation clubs.”

The announcement was warmly received by youths in the former mining town. They said the rehabilitation would improve sporting activities and employment opportunities in their area.

“We are grateful that Government is moving to rehabilitate the infrastructure and we are hopeful that the rehabilitation will help create employment, entertainment and exposure,” said Simbarashe Zimbandi of Mhangura.

Meanwhile, youths who excel during the Makonde Senator Sporting Tournament have been promised a chance to represent Zimbabwe at the International Working Group of Women in Sport to be hosted by Botswana from May 16 to May 20 this year.
