MICHAEL Jackson impersonator Skhumz Moonwalker (Sikhumbuzo Sigola), has made an impassioned plea to local promoters and other industry players to give emerging creatives opportunities to showcase their talent, saying exposure is essential for artistes to sharpen their craft and build sustainable careers.
The Bulawayo-based creative said many up-and-coming artistes were struggling to break into the entertainment industry because promoters and event organisers often preferred established names, leaving talented newcomers with limited opportunities to gain experience.
He called on promoters, radio stations, event organisers, clubs and brands to deliberately create platforms where emerging artistes can perform, learn and develop their skills.
“We are tired of being treated as though we don’t exist. Up-and-coming artistes are not asking for handouts. We are asking for opportunities to perform, learn, grow and prove ourselves,” he said.
For Skhumz Moonwalker, talent development cannot happen in isolation. He said artistes needed real-world performance opportunities to build confidence, understand their craft and learn how to connect with audiences. He urged promoters to consider giving upcoming creatives opening slots, smaller stages and opportunities to perform at community events as a way of nurturing the next generation of talent.
“If promoters, radio stations, event organisers, clubs, brands and other industry players believe we are not good enough yet, then they should create platforms where we can develop. How are we expected to improve if nobody gives us a chance?
“Give us small stages, opening slots, community shows, workshops, mentorship and honest criticism. Behind every up-and-coming artiste is a dream and behind every song and performance is someone who has sacrificed time, money and sleep to pursue that dream,” he said.
He said the entertainment industry should not only take notice of artistes once they had achieved commercial success, arguing that support at an early stage could help turn raw talent into established careers.
“Promoters must not wait until an artiste becomes famous before supporting them. They must support the seed, not only the tree. Some of the artistes being overlooked today could become tomorrow’s biggest stars,” said Skhumz.
Over the years, Skhumz Moonwalker has carved a niche for himself with his energetic performances and striking recreation of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson’s signature dance moves. Born and raised in Plumtree, Skhumz began perfecting his Michael Jackson impersonation in 2007 while attending Lobengula Secondary School, inspired by his late father’s love for music and dance.
Since then, his performances have taken him to different parts of Zimbabwe, where he has entertained audiences at weddings, corporate events, community programmes and entertainment shows. His performances have reached audiences in Bulawayo, Gwanda, Plumtree and Lupane, among other areas.
He has also showcased his talent at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, sharing the stage with other impersonators, including Mukudzeyi “MukuZim1” Chirume, who portrays the late former
President Robert Mugabe. Skhumz has further shared stages with prominent artistes such as Sulumani Chimbetu, Jah Master, Big Zulu and Alick Macheso. He has also performed at the
Bulawayo Dance Festival and Ingutsheni Central Hospital’s annual Cake Day, using his craft to entertain diverse audiences while keeping the legacy of the King of Pop alive.
