SIAVONGA. — Zambian President Michael Sata has challenged the country’s power utility to ensure that access to electricity reaches all citizens and not only the educated.
In remarks delivered when he commissioned a newly-constructed 180 megawatt generator at the Kariba North Bank Power Station, which is part of an extension programme to increase power generation, President Sata said it was disheartening that most people in the district, including traditional leaders have no access to electricity.
He said Zesco Limited should ensure that electricity reaches all citizens regardless of the status in society. “People of Siavonga suffered during the construction of the dam (where the power station is) but they have no access to electricity. There are five chiefs in the districts but their palaces are not electrified. Electricity should not just be for the educated,” Sata said. — Xinhua.
