Midlands celebrates successful hosting of Zanu-PF conference

Hundreds of the party’s supporters, including Politburo and Central Committee members from the Midlands province, turned up for the celebrations held at the main auditorium, the venue for the conference which ended on Saturday last week.

Defence Minister, Emmerson Mnangagwa, Midlands Governor and the Province’s Zanu-PF chairperson, Cde Jason Machaya, his predecessor, Cde Cephas Msipa, Environment and Natural Resources Management Minister, Francis Nhema, Minister of State Responsible for Land and Land resettlement in Vice-President John Nkomo’s office, Flora Buka, among many other top officials graced the occasion.

Cde Mnangagwa said the celebrations were his way of expressing gratitude to the people of the Midlands for their unity of purpose that saw the province hosting a successful conference.

“We had so many people who worked hard for the construction and completion of the Conference Centre in time for the hosting of the event. This project would not have been completed without the Midlands Development Association which went around raising funds and other inputs for the centre. This association has a long history as it was led by great leaders, our national heroes that include the late VP Simon Muzenda who was its patron, the late Richard Hove who was the treasurer and I was the association’s chairperson then. I am now its patron and the association still has the same vision of developing the province,” said Cde Mnangagwa.

Cde Mnangagwa took time to express his gratitude to individual committees, persons and organisations that were involved in supporting the idea of setting up the imposing 5 000-seater Gweru Conference and Exhibition Centre.

Meanwhile, in his vote of thanks speech, the Midlands Governor, Cde Machaya said the province set for itself high standards through its successful construction of the giant structure.

He said the province’s unity of purpose should be retained ahead of next year’s harmonised elections.

“Let’s continue working together as a united family. That way we will achieve our goals. This project, the Conference Centre, is a result of our being united as a province. People out there are now curious as to what we will do in future, especially our performance in next year’s elections. I want to say we will definitely win the election, what we only need to do is to remain focused and united,” said Cde Machaya.

The Midlands Governor expressed his gratitude to Cde Mnangagwa for being an able leader as demonstrated by his spearheading the construction of the conference centre.

He said able leaders are often seen through their works.

“There are many leaders and seniors in the country but an able leader is seen through his or her work. I want to say to Cde Mnangagwa, you are an able leader, my senior. Let’s continue working as a united family. Thank you Cde Mnangagwa for your input and brilliant ideas,” said Cde Machaya.

Workers are still on site putting final touches to the impressive structure.

Gweru now boasts of a state-of-the-art venue that can host international events, including musicians, in the Conference Centre.

The place is suitable for the holding of weddings, conferences, musical shows and church meetings.
