ELECTIONS to usher in a new executive for the Midlands Pool League will be held today at the Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) boardroom.Former chairman Edward “Mboma” Ganyani and Senga Pool Club chairman Vandirayi Hove will vie for the hot seat of one of the fledgling provincial leagues.
Incumbent chairman Paul Mukwembi chose not to seek re-election as he has set his sights on the treasurer’s post.
“I think I have had my time at the helm of the league and it is time for someone else with fresh ideas to take over. I wish to be part of the incoming executive but with lesser responsibilities so I will be running for the post of treasurer,” said Mukwembi. who took over from Molest Gaka who migrated to Canada midway through his term.
Marky Kunaka and Kudzai Manhambo are also vying for the treasurer’s post. Outgoing treasurer and Shurugwi-based businessman Phibion Chakabveyo said he would not be contesting.
Chairmanship candidate Mboma pledged to “restore sanity” in the game and said he would work round the clock to secure meaningful sponsorship.
“The manner in which the game was being run was so shambolic that no sane sponsor would want to be associated with it. So once we put our house in order, we would want to secure sponsorship so that we can motivate our players because there is nothing as painful as playing for the whole season and at the end of it all you are not acknowledged for your efforts,” he said.
Efforts to get a comment from Hove were futile as both his mobile phones were unreachable. Other positions up for grabs are that of vice-chairman in which incumbent Lloyd Chiyangwa is battling it out with Garikai Muyedziwa and Macdonald Kunaka of Airforce Pool Club while present secretary Passmore Gutu will face Jacqueline Chipwanyira, the Mabvokocho Pool Club benefactor.
Long serving fixtures secretary, Passmore Ndebvu who went in unopposed in the last elections is being challenged by Clever Gwengwe.
