TWO terrified shop workers were chased into nearby fields by robbers before being caught and forced back into their workplace during a terrifying overnight raid in Bulawayo.

The robbers allegedly smashed their way into the shop at Eversly Farm at around 1am on September 23 before chasing the women into the darkness.

According to Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the women were asleep in a backroom when they were jolted awake by loud banging on the main door.

One of the women asked who was there, but the suspects, who were trying to force their way inside, ordered her to keep quiet.

When they failed to break down the door, the robbers moved to the other side of the building, smashed a windowpane and forced their way inside. Fearing for their lives, the two women fled into nearby fields.

But the robbers gave chase.

The suspects caught up with the women, threatened them with unidentified objects and forced them back into the shop.

Once inside, the robbers demanded cash before making off with US$150, groceries worth US$266 and a cellphone.

The total value of the stolen property was US$466.

Nothing was recovered and the suspects remain at large.
