Mighty Warriors resume preps

THE Mighty Warriors resumed their Olympic Games preparations yesterday at Bindura University of Science Education with 24 of the 25 players called up reporting for camp.

The senior women side coach Shadreck Mlauzi called up a 25-member squad as they intensify their preparations and by yesterday only Rufaro Machingura was missing from camp.

Mlauzi said they are happy with the response from the players as they had their first training session yesterday.

“We have had a session today (yesterday). It focused on strength work, we went to the gym. We have 24 players at the moment. We have one who is yet to report for camp, Rufaro Machingura, she is down with chickenpox.

“She has been treated but the major problem is it’s infectious, so we don’t want the whole team to be infected. It’s a matter of two to three days before she joins the team,” said Mlauzi.

Mlauzi said although they are just beginning training, the technical team is impressed with the positive attitude displayed by the players.

The Mighty Warriors coach added that the quartet of strikers Rudo Neshamba, Erina Jeke, Rutendo Makore and goalkeeper Chido Dzingirai, who were down with injuries seemed to be okay but still need more sessions to assess them.

“The fitness level is not bad. The response we got, they seemed sharp and ready to get down to serious business. I like the attitude we saw and we are looking forward to good final preparations.

“They seemed okay in today’s training, maybe it being the first session, we are yet see them really. When we do some of the activities that require some running then we will see how they are doing,” said Mlauzi.

Zimbabwe and South Africa are the two African countries that will be battling it out in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when the Games burst into life in August.

The Olympics football tournament kicks off on August 3.
