Milanzi claims ABU belt

The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board yesterday congratulated boxer Hassan “Starboy” Milanzi after he won the Africa Boxing Union SADC super-bantamweight title in Zambia at the weekend.

The 27-year-old pugilist emerged victorious over Zambia’s Gracious Simwalizi via split point decision in a fight held at the Government Complex in Lusaka. Remarkably, this was his first international title.

“A huge congratulations to Hassan Milanzi for grabbing the ABU SADC Super Bantam Weight Title, his hardwork and perseverance has paid off,” said the ZNBWCB in a brief statement. The regional title fight was the main supporting bout to the ABU title bout featuring Zambia’s bantamweight boxing professional Davy “Sniper” Mwale and Kenyan James Mungeni. Mwale knocked out his opponent in the 11th round of the ABU fight to defend his title.

In the only women’s welterweight fight, Zambia’s Catherine Mulyata defeated DR Congo’s Raisa Tshof with a 5-0 unanimous point decision after six rounds of thrilling boxing.

But there was more reason to celebrate for Zimbabwe, as Milanzi became the second boxer to claim an ABU belt this year, following in the footsteps of stable mate Aliyah Phiri, who holds the ABU lightweight belt.

Both boxers belong to Ali Phiri’s Otto Boxing Club.  Milanzi now has 12 wins in 16 fights since 2018 when he turned professional in Masvingo.
