BUJUMBURA. – Police agents on Tuesday uncovered a cache of military equipment in Ngagara neighbourhood in the north of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, the Burundian police spokesman Pierre Nkurikiye said in a Tuesday press conference.
“Early today (Tuesday) morning, security forces on a patrol duty uncovered a cache in Ngagara neighbourhood where an important quantity of arms had been hidden.
“Those arms were uncovered thanks to citizens who gave us the information about the arms cache,” said Nkurikiye.
According to him, two persons were arrested in connection with using or owning those arms.
Nkurikiye indicated that arms seized include five guns of the Kalashnikov type, one rocket launcher, 29 bombs, several ammunitions of various types of guns, five chargers and a pair of a Burundian military uniform.
Nkurikiye said, “I call on the citizens to supply more information about security so that all arms illegally kept can be withdrawn from people before they make damages.”
Ngagara is one of the neighbourhoods where residents staged in April protests against the third term of Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Violence that started in April has claimed more than 400 lives, according to rights groups. – Xinhua.
