A miner died while two others were injured when a mine shaft collapsed in Filabusi.

Mr Crispen Ndlovu (34) of Silalatshani area died at Piri Piri C4 Mine in Msithi area at around 10AM last Wednesday.

Mr Emmanuel Sibanda (31) and Mr Philisani Sibanda (26), both of Hlelambili village under chief Ndube, were seriously injured and are admitted to

Filabusi District Hospital. Fellow workers rescued the trio but Mr Ndlovu died before he was taken to hospital.

Matabeleland South Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm the sudden death of a 31-year-old man who died when a mine shaft collapsed.

He was with two others who sustained serious injuries. The trapped miners were rescued by fellow workers but Mr Ndlovu died before he was taken to hospital.

Insp Ndebele urged people to desist from mining in unsecured shafts as that exposes them to danger.

“In the past we have held campaigns to sensitise miners on the need to ensure their mining operations are safe but accidents continue. We also urge miners to ensure their mines are inspected regularly,” he said. — @winnie_masara
