A 26-YEAR-OLD man from Lushongwe area in Gwanda slipped and fell to his death in a mine shaft. Sources said Lawrence Ncube accidentally stepped on a heap of stones while walking around a mining area and fell into the shaft, where he got trapped.

Ncube is said to have been employed as a tributor at Horn Mine.

Lushongwe area councillor Mozita Moyo confirmed the incident.

“A man identified as Lawrence Ncube died yesterday (Saturday) afternoon and we’re not sure where he was coming from or going,” said Clr Moyo.

“All I can safely say is that he accidentally slipped and fell into a shaft and died instantly after he got trapped by rocks underground.”

Moyo said it took villagers more than 10 hours to retrieve Ncube’s trapped body from underground.

An official from the mine expressed shock over the incident saying “no such incident” has happened in the history of the mine.

Police could not be reached for comment.
