Miner kills colleague, dumps body

A 21-YEAR-OLD miner allegedly fatally assaulted his colleague for stealing US$33 from him and dumped the body in a bush to conceal the offence.

Albert Tom (21) allegedly killed his colleague on 13 July at Chirwa Mine in Mashonaland Central.

The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) in a statement on X, said: “Albert Tom (21) was arraigned before the Guruve Magistrates’ Court on allegations of murder.

“It is the State’s case that the accused person confronted the deceased on the 13th of July 2024 at 0100 hours at Chirwa Mine, Mapeta Hills, Guruve and accused him of stealing his US$33.

“He allegedly struck the deceased using a steel rod twice on the forehead and several times all over the body. The accused left the deceased lying on the ground and went back to join his colleagues in the shafts. When he returned, he noticed that the now deceased had died. He dragged the body and dumped it 40 metres away from their base in a thick bush.”

The matter was remanded to 30 July.
