MORE than 150 mining executives will today trade their suits for the long clubs when they tee off at the prestigious Bulawayo Golf Club in the annual Zimbabwe Chamber of Mines Golf Championship.
The greens and the fourways have been described as magnificent, setting the stage for a unique golfing weekend for the executives. Defending champions and hosts Zimplats, will be the team to beat and according to the company’s corporate and communications adviser, Busi Chindove, 30 mining companies will all be trying to wrest the bragging rights from Zimplats.
“The main objective of the weekender is for people in the mining industry to network, interact and naturally compete in golf.
“The network includes business partners who provide goods and services to the mining industry, a key element in the national economy,” said Chindove.
She added, “In short, this weekend’s golf tournament by mines is meant to promote fellowship among mining industry employees.”
The playing format, according to Chindove, would be a fourball better ball.
In this format, golfers tee off in groups of four (either as one four-person team or as two, two-person teams), and each golfer plays his own ball. So there are four balls in play on each hole, but only one ball (the better ball, or low ball) counts per team per hole.
If a four-person team is in use, then all four golfers tee off and play their own balls into the hole. The low score among the four counts as the team score for that hole.
If two-person teams are in use, then Team One and Team Two tee off together (so four balls are still in play), and each team’s low ball counts as that team’s score on each hole.
“Tomorrow (today) will really be about cementing the synergies and strategising. Real action will be on Sunday (tomorrow), we call it the hot day,” said Chindove.
Deputy Minister of Mines and Mining Development and former Hwange Colliery Company managing director Fred Moyo is the guest of honour and will tomorrow deliver a keynote address.
Some of the mines expected to attend include Mimosa, Murowa Diamonds, How Mine, Hwange Colliery, Mwana Africa, Trojan, Fredda Rebecca, Unki among others.
Chaferfly Mining Supplies are among a host of corporates that are supporting this prime mining organisations’ sporting event.
