ONGOING co-operation between the Government and the International Organisation for Migration is enhancing the management of migration issues, which is essential to the success of National Development Strategy 1, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Kazembe Kazembe, has said.
IOM director Ms Diana Cartier paid a courtesy call on Minister Kazembe at his offices in Harare yesterday and the two discussed ways of improving the collection and management of migration data.
They also spoke about gathering intelligence and developing risk analyses in compliance with national data protection legislation and established international standards.
Speaking after the meeting, Ms Cartier said the IOM is committed to ensuring an improved management of migration data.
“One of the key areas we discussed was on data management and having information that is available on migration,” she said. “We also know that, that is a key way of also being able to protect people, understanding what are their needs as they are crossing the borders, as people arrive in the country or leave Zimbabwe.”
By assisting Zimbabwe with data collection within the border management process, Mrs Cartier said the IOM can help verify and validate the assumptions that inform the country’s risk management strategies, and so, improve the border management practices and migration policy.
Minister Kazembe said the IOM would help shape the management of migration data within the country.
“As I mentioned earlier, we are deploying technologies and they also have solutions in that regard in terms of data management. And they have offered to assist us as and when we need help in all those areas,” he said.
“They have been in this business for a long time. And we can benefit from their experience. So, they have pledged to assist us in terms of solutions in order to manage data in a better way.”
