SPORT and Recreation Minister Makhosini Hlongwane yesterday joined the nation in mourning one of the country’s football legends, Paul Gundani, who passed away on Wednesday.

Gundani will be buried today in Kwekwe.

“It is with great shock and grief that we learn of the untimely death of the legendary Warrior and arguably one of the finest footballers to ever emerge out of the country – Paul Gundani.

“The nation has been plunged into mourning following the premature death of Warriors legend and Footballers’ Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) secretary-general.

“Paul Gundani had a very successful football career which saw him play for Ziscosteel in Kwekwe and ultimately the famed Dream Team.

“After his successful club, national and international career, Paul continued to make significant contribution to the development of football in Zimbabwe.

“The passion saw him becoming instrumental in the formation of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe hich was the first of its kind in Zimbabwe. He became the secretary-general of this Union until his premature death.

“He was also involved in the Zimbabwe National Youth Games technical department for the Midlands which is, again, a clear demonstration of his dedication to the advance of sport in Zimbabwe.

“He was indeed an astute sports administrator par-excellence. We will forever treasure his magnanimous contribution to Zimbabwean football and sport in general.

“Let me, on behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe, my Ministry and on my own behalf, express my heartfelt condolences to his widow Hazvinei, his children, the Gundani family and the entire football fraternity.”

The Sports Commission also paid tribute to the late Gundani in a statement released on Thursday.

“Paul’s dedication to both club and national team duty was unquestionable as he was always available each time he was selected into the team.

“As a nation we have been robbed of an astute and level-headed Sports Administrator whom we all thought was going to assist extricate football from the challenges that it is going through,” said Sports Commission director general, Charles Nhemachena.
