BULAWAYO residents have been urged to come in their numbers to commemorate the 36th Independence Day celebrations to be held at White City stadium on Monday. The Minister of State for Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Nomthandazo Eunice Moyo said economic challenges should not stop people from taking part in the national celebrations.

“Bulawayo is part of Zimbabwe. Any national event that’s happening in this country, Bulawayo as the second largest city has to be involved. As a province we must celebrate because problems bedevilling the country are well known, it’s not something that’s new. There’re those who imposed sanctions on us, but we’re trying our best as a country to get out of that situation which is quite a challenge,” said Moyo.

She said the challenges being experienced at the moment will not last forever as witnessed by mega deals signed with countries such as Japan and China.

“The last 15 years have been difficult for us as a nation. We’re still struggling but let’s celebrate and have hope because with the deals that we’ve signed with Japan and China we’ll be on our feet soon,” Moyo said.

She said the country should treasure the gains of independence and the government was committed to reviving the city’s industries as witnessed by its continuous assessment of how firms were performing.

“The fact that we’ve managed to survive sanctions, hope is there for Bulawayo because industries are geared to meet the challenges that are there. There are some strong companies that the government must support. There are some weak ones that the government must also support by appreciating the history of the challenges,” Moyo said.

She dismissed the notion that national events like Independence Day are just Zanu-PF celebrations saying the liberation war knew no political party.
