Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, has urged youths to shun drugs and intoxicating substances by channelling their energy toward productive activities like agriculture to improve their livelihoods.
He said this while officiating at the Provincial Pfumvudza inputs distribution programme in Buhera District, where he said agriculture presented young people with opportunities to generate income, create employment and contribute to national development.
Minister Mugadza said young people had a critical role to play in developing the country’s economy, particularly the agricultural sector and should take advantage of Government-supported agricultural programmes, including Pfumvudza, where inputs and agronomy services are provided free of charge.
“As we pursue agricultural development, we must confront the scourge of drug and substance abuse, which threatens our youth, families and national productivity,” he said.
“Under the astute leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Government has intensified efforts through law enforcement operations, public awareness campaigns, inter-agency coordination and rehabilitation initiatives.
“However, the Government cannot win this battle alone; our communities must take collective responsibility for ending this menace.”
He urged parents, traditional leaders, churches, schools and community members to work together in protecting our youth, reporting drug trafficking and promoting responsible behaviour.
“To our young people, my message to you is to choose productivity over destruction and that you channel your energy into agriculture, entrepreneurship, vocational training and other meaningful pursuits,” he said.
“Let us unite against drugs, reject gender based violence and protect the peace in our communities. A drug-free generation is the foundation of a productive nation and a prosperous Zimbabwe.
“The future of Manicaland Province depends on the actions we take today. Let us prepare our fields, conserve our water, plant early, plant well and plant with pride.
“Together, as one people with one purpose, we shall defeat drought, defeat drugs and build an empowered, prosperous and upper middle-income society by 2030.”
