Ministers get protocol training ahead of SADC Summit

AS preparations for the arrival of Heads of State and Government for the 44th SADC Summit pace up, a training programme on diplomatic protocol was held yesterday for ministers charged with receiving the leaders.

Foreign Affairs and International Relations Minister, Ambassador Frederick Shava, led the proceedings.

In his address, he said the SADC Summit was “so important” to Zimbabwe because President Mnangagwa will assume the Chairmanship of SADC on August 17.

“This huge and magnificent event therefore requires the hands of the whole Government on deck,” he said.

“For that reason, the ministry has invited you here to explore various aspects of protocol, including diplomatic etiquette, ceremonial procedures, and international protocol standards.

“As Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, we recognise the vital role protocol plays in our diplomatic engagements, international relations and regional cooperation.”

Centuries of international relations and diplomatic practice have established rules which smoothen communication between people and on formal occasions such as the SADC Summit, one mistake can compromise international relations and lead to embarrassment for the nation.

Amb Shava said the training programme for ministers was aimed at enhancing understanding of the protocol procedures, fostering greater collaboration and strengthening bonds as ministerial leaders.

“This training aims to equip us with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively navigate the details of protocol, ensuring we proudly represent our nation with dignity and grace,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amb Shava also met UK-based Mr Harpal Mann, the CEO and founder of Clear Mobitel, who is keen to invest up to US$200 million in Zimbabwe.

Mr Mann thanked President Mnangagwa and the Government for inviting him to attend the SADC Summit which started with the 7th SADC Industrialisation Week.

“I am here today visiting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Shava, and just wanted to commend the Government of Zimbabwe and all of the ministries for working very closely with us as we are looking into investing into Zimbabwe,” he said.
