Ministers receive diplomatic training

Ministers, who are expected to receive Heads of State and Government during the 44th SADC Summit in August, yesterday underwent diplomatic training that was facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade.

The Summit will take place from August 7 to August 19.

Senior officials will meet from August 8 to August 11, Ministers are expected to arrive on August 12 for their engagements before the meeting of the Heads of State opens on August 17.

The SADC Summit will be held under the theme, “Promoting innovation to unlock opportunities for sustained economic growth and development towards an industrialised SADC”.

Ministers will be expected to do some protocol related assignments during the course of the Summit including welcoming the visiting Heads of State and Government.

The Ministers who attended yesterday’s training included Transport Minister Felix Mhona, Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe, ICT Minister Tatenda Mavetera, Tourism Minister Barbara Rwodzi and the Attorney-General Mrs Virginia Mabiza.

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Ambassador Frederick Shava welcomed the Ministers to the SADC protocol training session.

“This year’s Summit is also significant in that it includes visits by Heads of State and Government to the Geo-Pomona Waste Management facility and the Museum of African Liberation on 18 August 2024,” said Ambassador Shava.

“In order to successfully host this important meeting, there is a need to ensure that we are well-equipped in terms of protocol.

“Today, we gather to enhance our understanding of the protocol procedures as we undertake all important functions as Ministers-in-waiting.

“This training aims to impart the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively navigate the details of protocol, ensuring we proudly represent our nation with dignity and grace.

“Today, we will explore various aspects of protocol, including diplomatic etiquette, ceremonial procedures, and international protocol standards. Our expert facilitators will guide us through interactive sessions, and practical experiences.

“I encourage you all to actively participate, share your experiences, and learn from each other’s perspectives. Let us embrace this opportunity to enhance our skills,” said Ambassador Shava.

President Mnangagwa is scheduled to assume the chairmanship of SADC on August 17 when the Summit opens.
