Ministry of Lands revises 99-year farm leases

collateral when applying for farming loans, a Zanu-PF Central Committee report released on Friday said.
The report, tabled by President Mugabe at the Zanu-PF 12th Annual National People’s Conference in Bulawayo, says the amendments to the 99-year leases were done in consultation with banks.
“This is a relief to farmers who have not been able to access loans from banks,” the report said.
Parties in the inclusive Government agreed that there should be an audit of the land acquired from former white commercial farmers to ascertain whether it was being fully utilised as well as determine whether the sizes of the farms were appropriate for the different beneficiaries.
The Central Committee report noted that at least 223 white former commercial farmers were being prosecuted for failing to vacate land after notice to do so expired.
Mashonaland West Province has the highest
number of such farmers with 47, followed by
Manicaland with 42, Mashonaland East 37, Masvingo 35, Midlands 34, Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South with 13 each and Matabeleland North
two.
The report noted that there were 198 white-owned farms totalling 117 409 hectares that had not been gazetted.
It recommended that these farms be gazetted as there was still demand for land for both urban expansion and farming.
“The land reform programme should be understood as the basic tenet of the indigenisation and empowerment drive, and as such that is imperative to continuously emphasise its irreversibility,” it said. – New Ziana.
