Said Agriculture Minister Joseph Made: “We have been concentrating more on crop production but the livestock sector is equally important.
“We are appealing to graduates to come to the ministry.”
Zimbabwe trains few veterinarians every year and many leave the country for employment elsewhere.
Those who remain in Zimbabwe prefer to work in the private sector.
The Department of Veterinary Services recently said it had an establishment of 280 vets with only 62 in post.
The department, like many other branches of Government, is under-funded
In efforts to improve service delivery and retain experts, Government has also re-called retired personnel.
These include former Agritex directors Dr Shadreck Mlambo, Dr Regina Gata and Dr Welbourne Madzima, who are working as technical advisers.
