EVERY year, the Harare International Carnival never fails to treat revellers with a glamorous night of beauties strutting down the ramp as they compete to be crowned Carnival Queen. However, this year proved to be an exception as the beauty pageant was not held due to lack of funds.

The failure to hold the event however inspired the Miss Zimbabwe Trust to come up with the idea of joining hands with the hosts of the pageant (Zimbabwe Tourism Authority). The two parties have agreed to crown the Miss Zimbabwe World First Princess as the queen of the carnival.

In an interview with Sunday Leisure, the chief executive of ZTA, Mr. Karikoga Kaseke said the partnership marked the establishment of a relationship that will benefit the modelling industry in Zimbabwe.

“We did not have the resources to hold the pageant this year and so when Mrs Chiwenga came up with the idea of partnering with us we embraced it as it was going to ease the pressure for us,” he said.

Mr Kaseke said the first princess of the Miss Zimbabwe World will from now on be crowned Miss Carnival until they reach a position where they have enough resources to fund the event.

“Our partnership comes at a time when the country is facing difficult economic situations and we hope that our joining hands will go a long way as far as the carnival queen is concerned,” he said

Taking over from Gamuchirayi Kujeke is Chengetai Kanonuwha. Last year, Gamuchirai won $20 000 prize money, $1 000 monthly allowance for the rest of the year and a car.

Strutting down the ramp was not the only thing Kujeke is good at but she is a DJ at SFm and a former junior parliamentarian.

As young as she is, she has worked with Roots an initiative that creates empowerment opportunities for young girls through transforming their lives.
