Sione Amidu, Sunday News Reporter

THE body of a man from Vubachikwe Mine in Gwanda who was reported missing a couple of weeks ago was discovered dead in Mtshabezi River last Wednesday.

Mr Enias Nyathi (57) had been reported missing by his daughter, Ms Sichelesile Nyathi, who had said the now deceased was last seen on 24 August at about 12 noon when he left his homestead going to the nearby shops.

Acting police Matabeleland South spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandolwenkosi Moyo said the police retrieved the body on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm.

“The incident occurred between 24 and 29 August. His body was discovered floating by a local young man who was fetching water from the same river. A report was made to the police and the body was retrieved, taken to Gwanda Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem,” he said.

A community member who identified himself as Mr Prince Dube said they had been looking for the now deceased for some time. Mr Dube said he was devastated on hearing the news of Mr Nyathi’s death.

“We got disturbed as a community that Nyathi had gone missing. He was not the kind of a person who leaves home for days and not return. A report was made to the police on 27 August. We continued to search but to no avail,’ he said.

He also said the search party went around the surrounding areas looking for him but found nothing. They were shocked after his body was found in Mtshabezi River.

Asst Insp Moyo, urged members of the public to desist from entering water bodies without protective clothing so as to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
