The Civil Protection Unit has appealed to the public for help to identify an unclaimed body of a woman believed to be aged just above 20 recovered from the Kariba ferry accident.

This comes as all the six bodies that had remained unclaimed at Kariba District Hospital have been positively identified and collected for burial.

However, the outstanding body had been claimed by a family that later discovered it was not their relative.

Local Government Services director in Mashonaland West Province, Mrs Cecilia Chitiyo said all the bodies had been claimed, including that of the woman, that was recovered on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 94.

“However, the family later said the body was not that of their relative and returned it, meaning that we now have one unclaimed body,” said Mrs Chitiyo.

The woman was wearing a grey hoodie jacket branded “New York Police Department”, a black jean skirt, black shoes and black skin-tight leggings.

Families with a missing relative matching the description have been urged to visit Kariba Hospital mortuary for identification.

The appeal comes as authorities continue efforts to identify remaining victims of the disaster.

Search and recovery efforts continue with the team of divers combing an area around the site of the disaster near Long Island, King’s Camp.
