Mketekete, who sometimes succumbs to pressure, will be hoping not to be drawn in the same four-ball with pre-tournament favourite Tongoona Charamba, who was lying in second place.
Charamba managed a two-under-par 70 and was tied with Brian Gondo, Tich Masemburi and Robson Saurombe yesterday.
Three of the four second-placed golfers are likely to join Mketekete to make up the last ball, which tees off around 10 am this morning.
Unheralded Robert Ndlovu did well to go into today’s round sitting in sixth place.
The golfer carded a one-under-par 71.
Darren Bismark shot a level par 72.
The Zimbabwe Professional Golfers Association president Arkil Yousuf hailed the very good course conditions.
“The course is playing well and we expect fairly low scores.
“The players will tee off early in the morning and that may give them an advantage.
“We had a little bit of wind today (yesterday) and we hope the weather will be favourable for the second round.
“The game is still on and anything can happen,” Yousuf said
The US$13 000 tournament will be played over 36 holes, which will be considered for prize money, before a Pro-Am over the weekend.
