HIGHLANDERS FC assistant coach Mkhokheli Dube praised Benjani Junior Mwaruwari for keeping his composure and showing his pace during his debut for the Bulawayo giants.
Dube was in charge from the bench as head coach Benjani Mwaruwari missed the match after being admitted to hospital with an undisclosed illness.
Benjani Junior came on after half-time as Highlanders edged Chicken Inn 3-2 on penalties at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Chibuku Super Cup after the match had ended goalless in regulation time.
Dube said the youngster handled the pressure of making his debut in front of Highlanders’ passionate supporters.
“The good thing he (Benjani Junior)is a good listener. I told him to just play simple. As you saw, he’s got amazing speed,” said Dube.
“When you’re coming into a new club with the number of fans that we have, sometimes there’s pressure. But he kept his cool and played really well.”
Dube said the appearance was an important first step for Benjani Junior as he settles into life at Highlanders.
“It’s one step forward for him. I’m hoping to give him more minutes,” he said.
