OPPOSITION activist and founder of Youth Advocacy for Reform and Democracy (Yard) pressure group, Temba Mliswa. was still in custody yesterday, a day after his arrest in Esigodini for allegedly addressing an unauthorised gathering. About 25 youths were present at the meeting which was held at Athens Bar in Habani at around 2PM.

National police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the former MP’s arrest. “I can confirm the arrest of Temba Mliswa on Sunday afternoon for addressing an unauthorised meeting in Esigodini in Matabeleland South. About 25 youths were present at the meeting.

“One is supposed to seek clearance from police before they conduct or hold a public meeting and in this case this wasn’t done. This therefore, led to his arrest,” she said. A source who preferred anonymity said Mliswa was arrested and is in police custody for holding a meeting without police authorisation.

“Police got a tip-off from some sources prompting them to attend the meeting where they arrested him alongside some of his activists. Zanu-PF youths also arrived at the scene disrupting the meeting proceedings,” said the source.
