Hip-hop artiste Mlue Jay is making waves in the Zimbabwean music scene, expanding his creative footprint beyond music production into directing, scripting, and editing.

His latest achievement comes with the music video for Young Gemini and Lady Squanda’s track Gunvosta, which dropped last week Monday and has already surpassed 100 000 views.

In an interview with Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, Johannesburg-based Mlue Jay, affectionately known as Umsaphazi, revealed how the project came about.
“We shot the video last week Tuesday. I was plugged by Phreshy, a fellow artiste I’ve worked with before. She linked me up with Young Gemini and Lady Squanda. After seeing some of my previous work, they were impressed and offered me the gig.
“We shot the video in Johannesburg, including scenes at a local taxi rank. I co-directed it with Sangel Mallo,” he said.

The collaboration brings together two of Zimbabwe’s standout female artistes. Young Gemini, one of the country’s fastest-rising female rappers with hits like Bag and Ngwere Yemunonyeni, is cementing her place in hip-hop, while Lady Squanda continues to command respect in the Zimdancehall scene.

For Mlue Jay, a Bulawayo native, the Gunvosta project marks another milestone in a career defined by versatility, creativity, and daring collaborations. The collaboration also sets the stage for future projects.
“Working with Young Gemini and Lady Squanda was awesome, no lie. They’re humble and talented. I even played them some of my songs, and Young Gemini promised we’ll work together in 2026. People should look out for a crazy collaboration between us,” Mlue Jay said.

Beyond music, Mlue Jay is proving his artistry knows no bounds, with his fingerprints now extending into film and production. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he eyes back-to-back success at the forthcoming Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAA), where he is once again nominated for Outstanding Hip-Hop Artiste, competing against Luchi Shiki, Noluntu J, Boy Nino, and Tee X Tekie. – Follow on X: @MbuleloMpofu
