ACTING President Emmerson Mnangagwa has donated 20 tonnes of mealie meal and groceries worth $10 000 to five charity institutions and a public hospital in Bulawayo.
The consignment was sourced from three grain milling companies in the city — United Milling (Pvt) Limited, Blue Ribbon Foods and National Foods Limited — and handed over to beneficiaries on Thursday.
Blue Ribbon and UniMills donated 10 tonnes of mealie meal worth about $5 500 each while National Foods donated $10 000 worth of groceries.
Cde Mnangagwa, who was on a tour of the milling firms in the city, handed over the donation to Bulawayo MPs Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube (Makokoba), Cdes Ntando Mlilo (Luveve), Godfrey Malaba (Pumula) and Maidei Mpala (Njube-Lobengula) who received the consignments on behalf of the charity institutions.
Mr Victor Mathema received the donation on behalf of Sir Humphrey Gibbs, which looks after children with down syndrome.
The other beneficiaries were Entembeni Old People’s Home in Luveve, Ekuphumuleni Old People’s Home in Mzilikazi, Thembiso Children’s Home in Luveve, Ingutsheni Central Hospital and The Jairos Jiri Home in Nguboyenja, which looks after people living with disability.
In their remarks the MPs urged the business community to extend more support to the less privileged, who are always on the receiving end in the absence of non-governmental organisations.
They paid tribute to the millers and the Government for supporting charity organisations despite the economic challenges.
