FOLLOWING their appointments as Vice Presidents yesterday, Emmerson Mnangagwa and Phelekezela Mphoko said they felt highly honoured. “I feel humbled that I’ve been accorded this honour to serve our beloved country, Zimbabwe, in the capacity of Vice President,” said Cde Mnangagwa, speaking at the end of an extra-ordinary Zanu-PF central committee meeting in Harare.
“I’ve assured the President and I would want to assure the party and its leadership that I’ll remain loyal and committed to uphold the correct line of the revolution which we’ve been on for the past 52 years.”
Cde Mnangagwa said the revolution goes through cycles, speaking in reference to former Vice President Joice Mujuru’s demotion which forced President Mugabe into a reshuffle.
“The revolution has a way of strengthening itself. It goes into cycles. This is another cycle where it rids itself of elements that’ve now become inconsistent with the correct line,” Cde Mnangagwa said.
Cde Mphoko, a liberation war commander and former diplomat to Russia and South Africa, said he saw his new role as a “challenge”.
“This is not a honeymoon, but a challenge. The challenges and problems that are there, I’ll find them from the people. People are going to tell us what the problems are, then together we’ll address them,” he said.
