TWO of the country’s mobile network operators, Telecel and Econet have activated an SMS based short-code which allows for their subscribers to send a premium rated SMS at a charge of 50 cents each in support of the Mighty Warriors.

The initiative operating under the name “Quest for Cameroon”, will use an SMS dedicated platform to raise funds for the Zimbabwe senior women’s soccer team which is in Cameroon, participating at the on-going Caf Women Africa Cup of Nations.

The SMS fundraising campaign will use the short code 45678.Mighty Warriors fundraising committee Chairperson, Lillian Mbayiwa said customers would be asked to text “GirlPower” to 45678 in order to be able to donate 50 cents to the Mighty Warriors.

By sending a message, subscribers will automatically enter into a competition where they stand a chance of winning a brand new Datsun Go vehicle or international air tickets.

Subscribers may enter as many times as they wish to enhance their chances of winning prizes.

All funds collected by the Mighty Warriors fundraising committee will be managed by PricewaterhouseCoopers, to ensure that they are accounted for and used for the senior women football team’s related needs.

The SMS campaign will run between now and December 31, 2016.

Meanwhile, the Mighty Warriors’ chances of qualifying for the next stage were dealt a blow on Tuesday night after going down 0-1 to Egypt in the group stages, albeit under controversial circumstances.

The Mighty Warriors were denied what appeared to be a clear goal after Burundian assistant referee ruled the effort offside although television replays showed otherwise.

Zimbabwe now needs to beat Cameroon in the last match and hope that South Africa and Egypt play for a draw to entertain chances of remaining in the tournament.
