HEALTH and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora yesterday toured Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital to assess service delivery and the availability of drugs, treatment, testing and diagnostic equipment.
He toured some wards, the hospital laboratory, radiology and dentistry centres where there are some modern digital machines.
Dr Mombeshora said Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital was earmarked to get modern equipment to support its elevation to a training hospital.
“Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital will be opening its doors to medical students next year and operating as a teaching hospital,” he said.
A teaching hospital, he said, should have well-equipped and functional departments.
He expressed satisfaction with the general services at the hospital.
“I am very happy with what I have seen. I talked to the patients, and they are happy with the service they are receiving,” he said.
“It was satisfying to see that drugs that were being prescribed are available. Drug stock levels are higher than last year.”
While drugs are available, Dr Mombeshora said, stocking levels should be around 80 percent for a provincial hospital like Chinhoyi.
Some wards, such as the male observation ward, needed modern beds and linen.
The minister said there was a need to revamp the hospital laundry department to ensure the availability of clean linen at all times.
Chinhoyi Hospital is equipped to do all tests and the reagents are available.
Provincial medical director Dr Celestino Dhege accompanied the minister before medical superintendent Dr Collett Mawire joined later.
