Money changer arrested for impersonating a soldier

A desperate situation calls for desperate measures! This sounds true for a man who has been arrested for dealing in foreign currency after he allegedly lied that he was a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) private officer and even had the guts to produce a fake identity card.

Medicine Dete (27) from Bulawayo’s Lobengula West suburb was caught by detectives next to Tredgold building in the city centre dealing in foreign currency. In a desperate bid to evade arrest, he reportedly lied to them that he was a ZNA private officer.

He did not stop at that, as he produced a ZNA identity card that belonged to Pride Maphosa claiming it belonged to him. Eager to find out if indeed he was a member of the army who had committed an offence by dealing in foreign currency, the detectives took him to 1 Brigade at Zimbabwe Military Police and the Zimbabwe Military Police checked their database but they could not find his name, and it was discovered that he was lying.

Bulawayo Deputy Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident.
“As police, we are worried about criminals who engage in impersonation in a bid to rob innocent citizens. We would like to warn would-be offenders that the long arm of the law would soon catch up with them.”
