FORMER Commonwealth flyweight champion Alfonso “Mosquito” Zvenyika is planning to have a testimonial bout against another high-profile former boxer from the United Kingdom in the not-so-distant future.
And he will prepare for the proposed duel tomorrow night when he gets into a three-round exhibition fight against Spencer Matsangura at the Harare International Conference Centre.
The exhibition is part of the undercard in Kudakwashe “Take Money” Chiwandire’s World Boxing Council super-bantamweight interim title defence against Zulina Munoz of Mexico.
The legendary Mbare-born boxer Zvenyika is coming back into the ring exactly six years after he faced Mbwana Manitumula of Tanzania.
The 47-year-old yesterday expressed excitement ahead of his much-awaited exhibition fight.
“Boxing is my middle name and it always feels good for me to be making my way back into the ring. I promise Zimbabweans a very good show,” said Zvenyika.
“This is a game that I have always called a career and to be back doing what I love the most is very much inspiring.
“I am looking forward to this exhibition in front of a projected bumper crowd. I am ready to do what I have always done during my heyday.
“Boxing, for me, is life and to be back to your way of life is very exciting.
“I am planning to have a testimonial against an opponent form the United Kingdom or someone from anywhere in the world who has a rich boxing history. So I would like to thank the organisers of this tournament who have seen fit that I also do an exhibition in the undercard.
“I feel greatly honoured by this gesture and I will do my best to entertain the Zimbabwean boxing fans while I use the fight to also prepare myself for the testimonial match that is coming soon.”
Zvenyika is one of the many legendary boxers who have inspired Chiwandire and the two have always spoken about it.
He believes being part of the tournament to which Chiwandire’s fight is the main bout will inspire her to victory while he has an advice for the 27-year-old best female pugilist from Africa.
“I have always talked to Kuda Chiwandire. She is a very respectable girl and her humility strikes me. She has told me several times that I am one of the guys who inspired her. That is something which is very humbling.
“I know she has a heart to win this fight. Her opponent is not easy. She has been in the trenches for a long time and her experience is something that can play a very key role.
“But, look, Chiwandire is a very intelligent girl. I am not afraid to say she will win. Let’s all rally behind her and show the world we are capable.”
Meanwhile, an updated bout card for the tournament will be revealed today after some boxers who were initially there withdrew.
