‘Most wanted’ criminal found with toy gun

Johannesburg — A “most wanted” man who escaped from the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court, on the East Rand was shot and wounded by police, who found him with a toy gun.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Bafana Ngwenya, 34, was facing several charges including armed robbery hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms.

“A manhunt had been launched since his escape as an awaiting trial prisoner from Thembisa Magistrate Court.

“He was arrested on Friday . . . morning at Matikweni Nkuna section after police followed up information,” Dlamini said.

“He was shot and wounded during his arrest and police seized a toy pistol.”

Ngwenya was under guard at a local hospital and would face a further charge of escaping from custody when he appears in court today.

His alleged accomplice, Khulani Zungu, is still at large. — AFP
