Mother Patrick Convent Primary School from Mainway, Waterfalls in Harare will represent Zimbabwe at the forthcoming SADC Schools Debate and Public Speaking competitions in Botswana later this year, following a commanding performance at national level.

The school’s debate team emerged champions out of 27 schools at the national finals held on March 21 at Amai Mugabe Junior School, defeating Sir John Kennedy Primary School of Kadoma in the final.

Their success follows a strong provincial showing on February 14 at Abbeys Junior School in Greendale, where they placed second in debate, public speaking relay and individual public speaking, while the quiz team finished fifth out of 23 schools.

The team is made up of Tinomudaishe Muzuva, Ethan Chikwangwani, Robert Tembo and Lemuel Mapini

Team coach Mr Samuel Mpisa said the qualification was a milestone for the school and the country.

“This is a proud moment for us as a school and as Zimbabwe. These learners have demonstrated discipline, structure and the ability to argue ideas with evidence and respect,” he said.

Mr Mpisa said participation at regional level would broaden learners’ horizons.

“Travelling to Botswana will expose them to peers across the region and strengthen teamwork, confidence and a deeper appreciation of Zimbabwe’s place in Africa,” he said.

He said preparations for the SADC showcase had already intensified.

“This is now a shared goal. Timetables are tightening, mentorship is growing and younger pupils are inspired. We are turning practice into polish to carry Zimbabwe’s voice with clarity,” he said.
