Mother’s Day cheer for Ekuphumuleni residents

MOTHER’S Day is celebrated today, with many taking time to honour the matriarchs, who have shaped their lives with love, strength and wisdom.

However, for some elderly mothers at Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing Home in Bulawayo’s Mzilikazi suburb, the day can serve as a quiet reminder of distance and separation from loved ones.

Last Friday, Lisani School of Excellence, in partnership with Africa Maths Excellence, extended love and care to the residents through a thoughtful donation and visit.

The organisations delivered a selection of groceries and supplies intended to support both residents and caregivers.
Among the donated items were peanut butter, powdered milk, margarine and other essential foodstuffs. Caregivers also received vital supplies such as latex gloves, which are crucial in ensuring safe and hygienic care for the elderly.

Ekuphumuleni Geriatric Nursing Home has long served as a sanctuary for elderly individuals, providing care and dignity in later life. Like many similar institutions, it relies on community support and donations to maintain the high standard of care its residents deserve.

“We were amazed, not only by how warmly the staff received us, but also by how clean and welcoming the place was — we felt at home,” said Mr Tapson Mathe, speaking on behalf of Lisani School of Excellence.
“We connected effortlessly with the elders, which has encouraged us to return again soon.”

Perhaps the most touching element of the visit was the inclusion of cakes, which added a celebratory touch and brought smiles to residents’ faces. These small yet meaningful gestures transformed an ordinary day at Ekuphumuleni into one filled with joy, laughter and appreciation.

The atmosphere at the home was warm and festive, with both staff and residents expressing heartfelt gratitude for the care and kindness shown.
“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the generosity shown by Lisani School of Excellence and Africa Maths Excellence. Their donation will greatly impact the lives of our residents,” said Ms Florence Ndlovu, chairperson of the home’s Human Resources Committee.

Staff members were visibly moved by the outreach.
“The donation has brought a sense of joy to our elders. We are grateful for the love and kindness expressed by Lisani School of Excellence and their partners, Africa Maths. The cakes and groceries have brought so much happiness to the mothers here at Ekuphumuleni. We deeply appreciate their thoughtfulness,” they said.

For the team from Lisani School of Excellence and Africa Maths Excellence, the visit was just as enriching for them as it was for the recipients.

“It is important that we not only remember our own mothers on this day, but also honour all mothers — especially those, who may not have loved ones nearby. This is our way of acknowledging the role they have played and continue to play, in shaping society,” said Mr Mathe.
