A BULAWAYO man from Emakhandeni has been jailed after stealing a gas cylinder and garden tools from his mother.
Goodluck Muchichwa (41) clearly ran out of luck when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube, who convicted him of theft and sentenced him to an effective five months behind bars.
He was initially slapped with a nine-month sentence, but four months were suspended; three on condition of good behaviour and one on condition that he pays back his mother, Susan Muchichwa (65), US$52 for her loss.
According to prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, the betrayal occurred on 17 October when Goodluck returned home around 5 PM to find his mother away.
“Taking advantage of her absence, the accused helped himself to a 5kg gas cylinder, a garden pick, a shovel and a metal dish,” she told the court.
When the unsuspecting mother returned, she was shocked to find her household property missing and her son the prime suspect.
She reported the matter to police, leading to Goodluck’s swift arrest. None of the stolen items were recovered.
