AMBITIOUS and title chasing Makomo FC suffered their first defeat in the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two league after they were beaten 1-2 by a fired up army side Moto Moto in an early kick off match played at Sports Pavilion last Saturday. To add to their woes in an afternoon which went horribly wrong, the coalminers finished the game with 10 men after captain Peter Ganhi was sent off on the stroke of halftime for a second bookable offence by referee Khumbulani Tshimiti.
Desire Manyanga and Shaibar Dimingu scored the goals for the soldiers while Makomo goalkeeper Laford Musungwa pulled one back from the penalty spot. The team’s chairman Mernard Maera was however adamant that the miners are still in with a shout despite the setback.
“Makomo FC are still very much in the race despite the loss. We will continue fighting to the finishing line to ensure that we are crowned champions because the race is still on,” declared Maera.
The biggest beneficiaries of the slip up by Makomo were run away log leaders Amagagasi FC who took full advantage by prevailing 2-0 over Zambezi Lions in a local derby in the resort town.
Lungile Nyathi and Antony Sibanda grabbed the all important goals which left Amagagasi five points clear at the summit.
Third placed Victoria Falls Tigers failed to gain ground when they settled for a one all draw away to Baobab Rovers at Megawatt Stadium. Prosper Mathe scored for Rovers while Quit Ndlovu scored for the visitors.
Elsewhere, the technical set up changes at Iwisa where Shepherd Magena was brought in to work with Tafi Nengasha seem to have immediately changed the fortunes of the Lwendulu based outfit as they thrashed Ingagula 3-0 at home.
Dani “Godomski” Ngoma scored a brace while another one was an own goal by Providence Ndokanga. ZRP Hwange, still in with a mathematical chance of grabbing the big prize, clobbered Corinthians 3-0 at Chinotimba Stadium.
Denzel Kutadza, Decent Sibanda and Michael Munenge scored a goal each as the home side simply chose to disappoint their fans.
As has become the norm in the league, Brazil continued with their Father Christmas attitude with another miserable show to lose 6-1 at home to Classic Luyando.
Blackrock edged Fire FC 3-2 in a pulsating match at the Sports Pavilion. Blessing Njekwa, Innocent Tshuma and Clifford Phiri scored for Blackrock while Stuart Mwanza and an own goal by Nigel Ndlovu reduced the arrears for the Madumabisa based visitors. Hwange Under-17s’ resurgence continued with a 2-0 victory away to Kamandama Celtics. The goals came from the boots of Lincoln Ngwenya and Brandon Phiri.
