MOTOCROSS fans will this week be treated to another exciting weekend when more than 70 riders converge at Donnybrook for the Southern African Challenge. The event is set for Sunday with 70 riders, most of them from Zimbabwe, expected to take part. Shaun Whyte, the chairman of the Bogwheelers Club who run the motorcycling sport of motocross in Zimbabwe, said so far Zambia is the only country that has confirmed their participation and they are likely to have four riders competing in Sunday’s event.
“NetOne are sponsoring the event. We are hoping to get 70 riders and there are riders coming from Zambia.
“We are hoping four riders will come from Zambia and they will include Dale Holiday and Fletcher Boab.
At this stage these are the names we have, we are still waiting for the other two names. “There could be, maybe riders from Botswana and South Africa,” said Whyte. Some of the local riders that are expected to take part in this event are Ashley Thixton and Tafadzwa Mawarire, and Whyte said they hope Zimbabwe will win the event again this year, although defending champion Jayden Ashwell will not be able to defend his title due to an injury. “Jayden Ashwell is the defending champion but he is injured and will not be competing. Zimbabwe should win it. The next events will be held in Zambia and Botswana,” Whyte said.
